New York, NY: Toray, Industries Inc., announces a new video for Raytela® POF demonstrating its attributes of a large, illuminated area, high flexibility and excellent chemical resistance, making it ideal for Endoscopic and Ophthalmic illumination and lighting for single-use and reusable devices. Watch Video.

The video demonstrates how Raytela’s polymethyl methacrylate or PMMA core with a fluorinated polymer outer cladding contributes to its being more reflective and able to transmit light at a large, 79° angle through the core. This unique design feature provides up to 1.8 times more light broadcasting at the distal end when compared to conventional polymer fibers or glass fibers which commonly have a 60° degree angle light transmission.

Raytela optical fiber can negotiate tight 9mm radius bends and bend back upon itself 180° with significantly less light intensity loss when compared to other competitive products. This allows smaller devices to navigate through more tortuous paths than ever before. During bending endurance tests Raytela withstood 34,500 bends before breaking, an outstanding 3X more than other polymer optical fibers. Because Raytela is very flexible and is a highly efficient transmitter of high intensity light, its greater light efficiency transmission means that it requires less intensity at the light source.

During an Acrylic Adhesive heating bath test performed at 77°F, Raytela was submersed for 4 hours, maintaining 100% of its light output power during the first hour. For hours 2-4 of the test, Raytela light output was only diminished by 2%, clearly demonstrating excellent chemical resistance against adhesives which are widely used in medical applications.

Toray utilizes full length inspection for Raytela, ensuring zero contamination with manufacturing in accordance with MAF3188, Raytela has FDA Master File registration. It is available in 5 diameters from 250 μm to 1500 μm. Samples are available for qualified medical design engineers: email requests to [email protected]
