WARSAW, IN May, 2010 – Canon Communications held its first Orthotec Exposition and Conference, dedicated to orthopedics developers and manufacturers in Warsaw, Indiana. The conference offered a mix of strategic insight and case study based technology presentations.
Brian McLaughlin, Orchid Design’s Business Development Manager, served as the chair for Enabling Technologies for Next Generation Design and Manufacturing. The goal of the presentation was to highlight some of the technologies that enable us in developing orthopedic products. The panel included participants from SolidWorks, Object Geometries, Materialise, ConforMIS.
McLaughlin's presentation addressed the limitations of the Osteoarticular transfer system (OATS, a surgical method of repairing articular cartilage defects with hylane cartilage) and potential solutions, such as utilizing cartilage in the forefoot for replacement of defects and “mapping” matching defect and donor sites. With permission from one of Orchid Design’s clients, Accelerated Orthopedic Technology, AOT, McLaughlin described the technology approach thought up by Dr. John Reach out of Yale, essentially using 3D scanning technology to map articular surfaces.
Orchid received very good feedback from attendees. “It was a great experience for Orchid Design to speak on behalf of the technologies that we use daily to help us do our jobs,” McLaughlin said. “I think it puts us in a position of being a resource and leader in our industry.”
