Perfecseal Wins Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Award

 

Perfecseal has earned the 2011 SPE roll-fed, thin-gauge medical thermoformed parts Gold Medal for design of the Biomet thermoformed tray.  This tray, designed and manufactured by Perfecseal’s Mankato, Minnesota team in conjunction with Biomet, holds a bone cement dispensing system used in vertebroplasty procedures.  The tray design features a cavity which allows the clinician to stand the device in the tray, while mixing and loading the bone cement into the device.  Additionally, the cavities of the tray are designed with undercut snap fits so that the components do not fall out if the tray is accidentally flipped over or dropped into the surgical field.  Perfecseal is a division of Bemis Company and global supplier to the medical device, pharmaceutical and diagnostic packaging markets.  Biomet Interpore Cross, Intl. is a leading provider of orthopedic implants and biomaterials.

The first challenge in this project was to fit the new product into an existing seal footprint, eliminating the need for the customer to purchase a new sealing tool.  The second challenge centered on the customer’s desire to provide an effective means of extracting the device from the tray and loading it with the bone cement.  This design team accomplished these goals utilizing Perfecseal’s collaborative design process to provide a packaging solution that met the unique needs of this application.
