From 20 to 10 µm! Axon' cable further decrease the thickness of their PTFE tubes for intracerebral micro catheters. Biocompatible and antimicrobial, the ultra thin PTFE tubes have an ultra smooth and auto lubricant surface for an easy insertion of surgical tools.
The outer surface of the tubes developed by Axon' can be made adhesive without any chemical treatment which avoids the formation of cracks in the tube wall. The inner wall remains sliding so that the platinum can be easily inserted into the tube.
Other interesting characteristics: the tubes are manufactured with a new range of environmentally and health-friendly PTFE resins free of PFOA. PFOA has proven to be toxic on a basis of high dosage injections in animal testing and may be banned in 2015.
Delivered on a silver plated copper conductor and on spools, the tube can be cut to the requested length for micro catheters. A thermoplastic layer can then be added by co-extrusion to obtain the catheter.
These catheters are used to treat intracranial aneurism. They enable to slide a platinum wire into the haematoma which forms in the brain when the venous wall gets weaker. Once placed, the wire permanently remains and helps the haematoma to resorb and protects the weakened wall.
Inert, biocompatible, antiadhesive, the PTFE is a material which particularly meets the requirements of medical applications. They can be used as tubes, tapes or insulating material.
